Preventing email notifications

Thgis seems straightforward but I've probably got something set wrongly.

I subscribed to a forum and ever time someone posts a message I get an email notification. I don't want this. I assumed that in my Edit Options section if I set

Use 'Email Notification' by default?

to No they would stop but they haven't.

Is there something else I need to do?

I would recommend unsubscribing to the forum, do this by selecting "user cp" option (in the search bar), select "View All Subscribed Threads" and unsubsribe to the thread.
