Alerts email/smtp set up????

I have been trying to get the email alert set up...it is likely easily done, but is there a paint by numbers process to getting this accomplished. I use [email protected] I used smtp.gmail.com as the outgoing....
But I cant get it to function.
Thoughts?

I used KB Article 1238 (Setting Up email alert in eSignal) to set up my Google email alert and they work well.

Please try check out the instruction and let me know if you have any problems.
