Since this is a new topic, I went ahead and split the thread where this was originally posted.

To answer your questions,

1. Yes, through DDE. You can find an example in the thread below.

2. Possibly with VBA in Excel. What you would need to find out is if there is a timer object in VBA that would allow a cell to be checked every X seconds to generate an alert. Also, not sure if you can play sounds via VBA, but it might be possible. Hopefully this will give you some ideas as to where to start looking anyway.
