I would like the $tick to alert me at 1000
ticks, and then alert me again without having to reset the next time it hits 1000 ticks. Is this something that can be done?

Yes this is possible in EFS. You could develop this type of study with the EFS Editor (Tools-->EFS-->Editor) or the Formula Wizard (Tools-->EFS-->Formula Wizard).
