broker functions

Hi

Is there anyway with the broker functions that you can request what is my current position. I am thinking if you are automating a trading system and you get a system crash how do you know what your position at the broker is? Also to you get a confirmation e.g. it was executed from the calls ... how would you know if a limit or stop order got hit?
