how can I use EFS as a scanner?

I am trying to create a scanner using an EFS formula. Everything was going fine until I discovered that a formula will not let you use more than 5 symbols. I was hoping to be able to scan at least 100 or so at a time. Is there a way around this? Is there some other tool I should be using to create my custom and complicated scans?
