  • working offline?

when im developing a study, i find it rather bothersome to have to scroll back through 6 months of one minute bars just so i can backtest my study for the hundredth time, so i was just wondering if it were possible for esignal to load data off my own hard drive rather than receiving data from the server so i could work quicker.

FWIW you don't need to scroll back through the chart to load the required data. You can do that by setting up a Time Template that will automatically load in a few seconds the six months of data on any intraday interval
For the instructions on how to set up Time Templates see this article in the eSignal KnowledgeBase

I am glad to know this. Some time ago, I called support and asked this question only to be told that the only way to load historical data was to scroll the chart manually.

Follow up question. Once the data is in the chart, can it be saved in a csv file or is that only possible when the data was retrieved by scrolling?

      Thanks,

This is a really good question! We have paid for the data so how do we save it and use it off line?

We don't currently have an "offline" mode per se as our application makes dynamic connections to our tick, history, news and depth servers. You can export data from an Advanced Chart, though, by right-clicking, choosing tools, then data export.

You can also get bar data by using QLink or you can look into a handy 3p utility called QCollector so you have several options.

          Thanks.

wow, i dont know why i didnt think of setting up a time template, that worked marvelously, i'd still like some sort of offline mode using saved data, but this certainly helped alot, thanks

edit: though it only seems to load 6 months, it wont load the extended data i subscribed for even though i set the template for 365 days, 730 days, even 2000 days, i still have to scroll back to get that data

edit edit: it does however work if i tell it to load # of bars rather than # of days, so its all good

I created a Time Template set to load 3500 Days of intraday data and the chart returned the available data [see enclosed screenshots]. Using version 10.5.1678

                Time Template Not Working Properly

I just tried the time templates with 1 minute data on RIMM and AAPL. I put in 1000 days worth of data, but it only downloads back to 11/08/2008 (roughly 200 days). However, if I just scroll back through the data in dynamic mode, I can go back much further (although this is tedious). What about the template functionality is limiting 1 minute data to 200 days?

I did try the template with 60 minute data, and this works as expected giving the 1000 days of data.

I created a chart and set the Time Template to load 3500 Days and the earliest date I get for the symbol ES [24hr] is 3/13/07. In the Cursor Window you can also see the number of bars loaded in the chart

I then tried the same Time Template using RIMM and the chart loaded over 1 milion bars starting from February of 99 [see screenshot encposed below]

Just updated to esignal version from 8/5/2009, and it is working fine now. I got back all the expected data with the template in 1 minute timeframe. I was running the version from 7/14/2009, so some thing must have been fixed in the last release.

                    Thanks.

That is in part why in an earlier reply to this thread I specified which version and build I was using
