  • Unable to get Email alerts to work

I've tried what seems like everything and can't get this to work... I'm using gmail, outlook 2003, emails send and receive OK no problem otherwise, I get the popup and audio alert in esignal, but no email alert received.
outgoing server set to smtp.gmail.com, encrypted.
Is there anything else I can do to troubleshoot this?
    many thanks

Thanks, I checked the to, from and Gmail SMTP host, these are all set correctly in Esignal (Esignal SMTP is same as in oulook 2003 which works OK with Gmail).

Do I need to use the exact same server ports and settings as in that link you gave me?
      Outgoing 25 (SSL deselected)
      Incoming 993 (SSL selected)?

My default outlook / gmail settings weren't set to these. If I change to these port and SSL settings I get error messages on recieving

Task 'Checking for new mail in subscribed folders on imap.googlemail.com.' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook is unable to download folder (null) from the IMAP e-mail server for account imap.googlemail.com. Error: Unable to connect to the server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Task 'imap.googlemail.com: Folder:Inbox Check for new mail.' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook is unable to download folder Inbox from the IMAP e-mail server for account imap.googlemail.com. Error: Unable to connect to the server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

these are the gmail settings I'm using that work ok in outlook 2003. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...n&answer=77661

I tried to use the gmail server settings shown at the foot of the esignal link, but gmail refuses to work through outlook with those settings on my connection, either the settings are out of date or my ISP doesn't agree with them. http://kb.esignalcentral.com/display...38&r=0.1413233

Is there anything else I can try to get this to work?

        Very grateful for any help.

          J123,

With the settings you have are you able to send email? The first link in your post is a broken link.
I just setup the an email account using the settings you outlined in your post and other then the test email Microsoft Outlook sends I'm unable to send any other email. They all just sit in my OutBox.

          I'd have to test the eSignal alerts portion but for email itself, the setting I have for sending and receiving email (which work) are;

The GMAIL POP3 mail server-- pop.gmail.com port 995 with SSL enabled
My ISP SMTP mail server-- smtp.vzwmail.net.

Once I've had a chance to test the alerts I'll post back.

Sorry that link didn't work, I've pasted the contents below: this is how my email is setup, and it sends and receives perfectly except for the esignal alerts:

To set up your Outlook 2003 client to work with Gmail:

            1. Enable IMAP in Gmail. Don't forget to click Save Changes when you're done.
            2. Open Outlook.
            3. Click the Tools menu, and select E-mail Accounts...
            4. Click Add a new e-mail account, then click Next.
            5. Choose IMAP as your server type by clicking the radio button, and click Next.
            6. Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

            User Information
Your Name: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: field of outgoing messages.
Email Address: Enter your full email address ([email protected]). Google Apps users, enter your address in the format username@your_domain.com

            Server Information
            Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.gmail.com
            Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

            Login Information
User Name: Enter your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com)
            Password: Enter your Gmail password.

            7. Click More Settings... and then click the Outgoing Server tab.
            8. Check the box next to 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
            9. Click the Advanced tab, and check the box next to 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)' under Incoming Server (IMAP).
            10. Check the box next to 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)' under Outgoing Server (SMTP), and enter 465 in the Outgoing server (SMTP) box.
            11. Click OK.
            12. Click Test Account Settings... After receiving the message 'Congratulations! All tests completed successfully', click Close.
            13. Click Next, and then click Finish.

I forgot to add, I'm using IMAP not POP Gmail as I need to access my emails on multiple computers. Is IMAP supported?

Hi AveryH, did you have any luck getting email alerts to work with the below settings? I tried a number of times but no email alerts are coming through.

Is there any way to trouble shoot this for example through any kind of activity log file in Esignal? I tried disabling Norton so I don't think the problem is coming from there, emails are sending and receiving fine through outlook otherwise.

                many thanks

After reading over this post I was hopeful that we could get this to work. But after hours of different configurations and testing and I was not able to get the email alerts to trigger. This morning I sent off a PM to hanspeterusa requesting the settings he used. When and if I hear back I'll try the testing again.

After more testing and using the setting used in this post, The setting do work and I was able to get the email alert via Outlook as well as being able to forward the message to other email account.

I just got it to work with those settings. Problem seemed to be my ISP was blocking my outgoing port 25 (which I don't normally use). My primary VPN was also blocking outgoing port 25. The message showed as sent in outlook but then it never arrived... I just tried another VPN that doesn't block outgoing port 25 and this worked, the email alert came through.

Can Esignal Email alerts work with anything other than outoing port 25 in Outlook 2003? Sometimes my backup VPN drops making this unreliable.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm not an expert on this topic, but it seems eSignal uses port 25 as the default port to communicate with SMTP servers. Here is a simple test to see if your ISP is blocking port 25 needed to access remote SMTP servers, such as Google's unauthenticated (not requiring a username/password) SMTP server-

                        1. Open a DOS command window. (Start -> Run -> enter "cmd")
                        2. At the C:\> prompt, type "telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25"

If you get a response like, "Could not open connection to the host, on port 25", then either the server is unavailable or your ISP is blocking port 25 to remote servers. For the latter case, port 25 can only be used to access local SMTP mail servers managed by your ISP. You can use your ISP's own SMTP server with eSignal only if it does not require password authentication. Currently, eSignal (v10.5.1721) does not support SMTP servers requiring a password.

If you get a response starting with the "220 " string, then your connection to the remote server on port 25 was successful. (Note: type "quit" to exit telnet session.)

For me, I had to upgrade my ISP service to a business class in order to get port 25 unblocked so eSignal can access Google's SMTP mail server. I understand that some other ISPs may unblock the port upon request. I could no longer use my ISP's own SMTP servers with eSignal because they had implemented a password authentication requirement for increased security.

By the way, after some testing, I discovered that eSignal email alerts work fine without the need of running an email client like Outlook. I am running Vista Ultimate.

All ports are set by the Outgoing Mail provider. The default setting for most mail servers is 995 incoming (POP# and IMAP) and 465 for the outbound (SMTP). The majority of companies that provide the smtp server have blocked port 25 which is what is used for mail relay(SPAMMING).

If I'm not mistaken I think these settings work for two reason 1) Google has unblocked port 25 to allow the relay and 2) they do not require any authentication to send mail out on this server.

Google seems to have blocked port 25

Email alerts are no longer working. I did some testing using Microsoft Outlook Express and it also is no longer working when I use port 25 to send messages between different GMAIL accounts. As expected, when I use the ports recommended by Google (which then requires a password), it works fine in Outlook Express. Unfortunately, I cannot custom configure eSignal to use a port of my choice (Gmail allows ports 465 and 587). Nor is there anyway to enter my SMTP password.

At this point, I guess I can try another solution- and that is to install my own email SMTP server software on my PC.

I hope eSignal 11 has an alert feature that allows users to custom configure a port number, SMTP server name, and a password.

eSignal 11 does have email authentication already and it is working well. Here's what the settings look like for Gmail. Feel free to try it out. It can be run alongside eSignal 10.6 with minimal risk as it is installed in a different location and has very few shared resources.

                              Regards,
