Download 11 but keep 10.6

I currently have version 10.6. A friend has advised me to upgrade to 11.7. As I am technologially challenged, how can I download version 11 yet still keep 10.6 "just in case"?

Installing version 11.x does not replace 10.6 or preclude its use [even concurrent]
