  • Volume on Indices

    Hi

I cant get volume on daily Indices except the Dow, while I can have the volume on intraday time frame. Im wondering why?
any clue? ES support says volume information doesnt exist for the majority of indices !!!!

    Dear jmarc,

Indices do not actually trade. If they have volume, then it is volume of the constituents added together.

Many indices are proprietary and so we don't know what the constituents are and as such we cannot create volume for them.

Here is Knowledgebase article which provides an explanation under "Why is there no volume on most indices?": http://kb.esignal.com/article.aspx?article=1385&p=1

    Sincerely,

    Eric

This is not right, cause volume exists on intraday time frame but NOT on daily time frame.....
So the question remains and for some reason ES cant give a good answer while all other data providers can deliver daily charts with volume which is a basic set up.
      Why ES cant????

        Hi,

First, volume on intraday charts is not volume-it is the number of price updates that occurred during the specified time frame (such as 5mins).

But basically, if the source for our index data does not provide the volume data for that index, then we can't provide it either. However, if you have some examples of indices that other charting services provide volume for, we can see what it would take to get the volume added to our datafeed.

        Sincerely,

        Eric

            Hi,

We have requested that we change our index data sources which would provide volume. If it is approved, it will still take time to implement.
