  • EFS Editor Window size/location

I just upgraded to ver 8 and have noticed that the program is still not able to remember the position/size of open EFS editor windows.

I need to keep several editor windows open at all times, since I am constantly writing/improving my formulae. It is a lot of hassle to resize every efs window every time I restart eSig.

Since editor windows seem to be part of a layout, why wouldn't eSig remember its size and location as it does with all other windows in a layout? Seems illogical to me, and this has persisted through many versions of eSig.

Or is there a setting which I am not aware of which enables this functionality?

    Thanks.

    WIndow size/location

The same bug exists for quote, detail, and advanced chart windows in my layout. Whenever I restart eSignal I have to resize and reposition many of the objects in my layout. This happens even though I save my layout and use Exit and Save when shutting down eSignal. I have reported this, again, to eSignal and hope this will be fixed. I agree this problem wastes a lot of our time.

FWIW I am not seeing any problems with saving the position or size of Quote and/or Advanced Chart windows. They all open in the same position and size in which they were last saved.
Can you provide some more details regarding the setup of the Page or Layout?

        size/location

I reproduced the problem for eSignal technical support and they have an open problem ticket for this. The problem seems to be related to how many open objects one has in the layout. I have 10 Advanced Charts, 8 Detail windows, and 20 Quote windows spread across two monitors (23" flat panel and 25" CRT). eSignal is able to correctly reposition and size the uppermost detail and charts that are visible in the main monitor physical window. All other virtual windows are incorrect.

As I said in my previous reply I am not seeing this problem. I have a test Page (and equivalent Layout) that has a total of 105 windows (100 Advanced Charts, 4 Quote Windows and 1 Quote Board) spread across two monitors and all the windows reappear in the same locations. Using version 8.0.

            size/layout

It will be interesting to see what eSignal eventually learns is the cause and why some users have no problems and others have the problem occur everytime. Thanks for your comments.

wscully is definitely right. I have had the same problem when having a lot of objects and I use the scroll bar on the page. When I saved with the scroll bar all the way to the left (home position) the objects would get resized. I found that if I saved my page with the scroll bar to the right the objects are saved in the right position. Just one of many small annoying bugs. It's like the bug where new daily bars are combined with the previous daily bar: been around forever, good luck getting it fixed.

I don't normally have the scrollbars enabled but I just tried using the scrollbar and saving the Page with the scrollbar all the way to the right or left and the windows still reappear in the same locations they were saved.

Why do you care? If it works for you leave it alone.

The fact that it is working for me and for several others that I know of may indicate that the issue could be related to something else [such as for example video drivers, etc].
Regardless I think that complex issues such as this one are best handled directly with support over the phone or through LiveRep rather than in this forum with little or no information as to what the setup is.

Handling issues through LiveRep or tech support is like not handling them at all. I seem to know more about the app then they do, and particularly in the case of LiveRep they seem more disposed towards getting rid of the call than in trying to solve a problem. The reason I started using the forums several years ago is because one of the eSignal people in it were able to duplicate a bug I found while the LiveRep person (unfortunately she is still there) didn't want to be bothered.

FWIW, I can duplicate the problem on different machines with different video setups.

                        Size/resize

I agree that the forum cannot solve a design/coding bug in the eSignal kernel. But, it is a usful way to learn that others are having the same problem. For example, when I originally reported this problem (several years ago) the Tech Rep was able to duplicate the problem and told me the solution was to reduce the number of windows in my layout. He promised to report the problem so that it could/would be fixed in a future release.

Last month I discussed it with support and the first person told me it was hardware before even getting the details of the problem (he also confirmed he had no software development experience). Ths was in spite of me telling him that it has occurred on multiple workstations (different video cards, operating systems, and cpus) over a period of years.

The second call to tech support was even more interesting, the rep interrupted my description of the problem to ask me why I was telling him as he wasn't going to do anything with the information.

The last call to support was successful (I think). The rep connected to my workstation and saw the problem firsthand. I sent screen captures to him and he says that he was documenting the problem and sending it to the product manager. I say successful, because the last guy actually knew what he was doing as far as problem identification and isolating the problem.

At any rate, the problem is not as aggravating under release 8; eSignal only fails a few times a week rather than the 4 or 5 times a day that it did under 7.x.

                        Have a nice day.
