it seems that esignal has a problem with the volume in the quote window for stocks that don't trade heavily. SHQCW has no volume as of 10:18 this morning but esignal shows volume of 32,000. is this a bug or is there a setting I can change to show today's true volume?

By default eSignal does not reset certain fields hence they carry through from the prior day as is the case of the symbol you reported.
To change this go to File-> Preferences and then click the Premarket tab and select the option you want (the default is Never blank fields).
In the image enclosed below you can see the result of that setting
