Its not possible to enter a symbol. Whats wrong?

Have you tried just typing a symbol as you would do in an Advanced Chart? You don't have to type it in that specific box.

now and then a fat green or red beam in time and sales. can someone tell me what this means?

If you right click on the T&S you can see what all the colors mean, in your case probably a new daily hi or low.
