How many monitors?

I just bought a 650 workstation from dell for $1350 with the spec above. I took out the video card. and put in:

GeForce4 TI 4600 dual-mon (AGP)

PNY NVS400 Quadro (4) (PCI) The Quadro is awsome!!! It also has some real sweet features that works excellent for trading platforms. This card is super Premo!!!
I paid $379 (www.newegg.com) They have the best price and service! Don't ask about the price I have my sources. lol

P.S. Make sure you have atleast a 450 power supply.

WOW! That's a great value on the Dell dual processor 3.4 GHZ Xeon. Just curious: does the user have any control over how resources are allocated to each processor?

Are you using both video cards? How would you compare the NVS400 to the GeForce 4600. Are you using 2 or 4 monitors?

The GeForce seems more a gaming card. Are you using dual monitors on it. What about the newer 5800 or 5900?

The NVS looks like it can do 4 monitors. But with a lower resolution on DVI. I'm using dual 19" RGB now but want to go to Flat screen eventually.

Is the 450w ps needed because of the video card?

Where were you guys a couple weeks ago! We could have used this discussion then! My wife and I just wrote a check for a new computer at home to be built by our son's friend. Could have used your insights because right now I have no idea what we paid for! Our sons seem to love it for their video games, but I wanted it to analyze! But seriously, thanks for creating this thread... I am in the market for a dual monitor layout. it really helps to read this kind of information. Talk some more so I know what to buy next time. Really do appreciate this topic.

I'm using a Pentium 2.4 with a Matrox G400 and a Matrox G200 pci card for 3 monitors.

I've never considered the videocards as a bottleneck for these 2D applications. Memory, cpu and harddiscs are, in my opinion.

I am running 6 monitors and the chip equally distribute the load. You can actually run of a pentium 2.4 xeon just fine. (I always over do it on my pc's) But, hey I get them so cheap will write up more later its the weekend have to go have fun!

Hi,
I just purchased two days ago (uncanny timing!) a new video card to take my computer up to 2 monitors.

Its a Matrox Millenium G550 32MB DDR (360MHz RAMDAC / AGP 4x/2x) - and it was recommended to me by the shop which originally built my computer (they will be installing the card next week). Its relatively cheap (£90 = $140?) and will hopefully do the job for trading.

I really didn't have a clue about video cards, but this article in a Paritech newsletter really provided some good advice (on a trading workstation as well) :

EdKoF - wondering if you also use TraderWorkStation from IB? I
talked to IB tech supprt today. They had me disable direct draw for TWS and I got an immediate improvement. Seems as though the older Matrox G400 is a little sluggish with DirectX. Still researching but the NVS400 FibGann has sounds mighty good.

Just remember people you get what you pay for!!! NVIDIA cards... Yes , are known for gaming, which they are good for. I do not take shop advices because I have seen them many times sell you there stock just to get rid of it. (I have seen many people burned by this) Not saying that all shops do. I have a freind that payed more for their pc and one video card than I paid for a pc and two video cards. When comparing them My pc out ranked hers by 75% atleast! I have tested many cards and I prefer to stick with Nvidia, for the fact they work great and if you like you can even have the benefit of gaming or graphics.
Another tip is if you are a fulltime daytrader/trader. you can also register youself with the IRS as a business and right of your business expenses. (Any good accountant should know this!) On top of this you can register with Dell as a small business (VERY EASY to do) and receive an estimated average of 20 to 30% off the retail price of hardware.

Becareful what you buy and who you buy it from. Do your homework! I did and it has payed off big as far as I am concerned.
Yes, it does take precious time, but this way you do get scammed by Tom, Dick and Harry.

Another thing, installing a video card is just about as easy as making a sandwhich.

I just want people to be aware, I have seen hundreds of people get scammed and end up with a bill and a piece of junk.

My GeForce4 Ti 4600 was just a high end gaming card that my brother had, it was an extra laying around so I used it because it supports dual mon. The NVS400 was designed for trading and yes it runs 4 monitors and the resolution is great. if you are looking to just do a dual monitor set-up I would reccomend the GeForceFX 5600. You can get it at best buy for $100 PCI or AGP. The 450 power supply is recommended if you are going to run more than 3 to 4 monitor because of the draw on the power supply. If you wan it to run more than 4 monitors I recommend you buy a motherboard significant enough to handle the draw too. Mine motherboard has 1 AGP slot and 5 pci slots.

What kind of improvement do you get? If find IB always sluggish in starting up etc, but I have that also on a computer which has fast/new Nvidia card in it. I always blame Java, which seems to slow down everything in life.

Where do you disable DirectX in IB?
