XP Pro Crashes

I just upgraded to XP Pro Corporate edition, and now eSignal and the Data Manager crash constantly.

I have loaded all of the updates from Microsoft for XP, I have un-installed and re-installed eSignal twice, including all registry entries and associated files.

I don't have any firewall software, or pop up blockers running. Unless there is something hidden in XP that I don't know about.

Are there any known issues with XP, or does anyone have suggestions??

Hi James,

Check out my thread about my PC freezing up. I have XP pro and my problem was hardware related.

Paul had driver problems and he fixed his problem.

Perhaps one or both of our solutions may help you!

What version of esignal do you have?

I was using 7.4 and it did that alot, I upgraded to 7.5, and now it only crashes every once in awhile.

Maybe I'll try 7.5.

But if anyone has any ideas on what I can do to remedy this situation, please let me know.

The error message that is being generated is as follows:

The instruction at "0x5f4012a1" referanced memory at 0x00000004. The memory could not be read.

I need to get this cured asap. My trading has come to a complete halt.

if you have more than one video card, make sure they are beside eacother.

Let us know how many window and efs's you are running and what your pc specs are? I am sure we can get to the bottum of this!

I am usually looking at 3 to 6 charts of the Forex market. Each one running with at least on stochastic stuny and a few SMA. I use the alerts extensively, especially the email function.

I normally have outlook express running in the background, but no other programs.

I run my tradding platform on another machine, so my charting machine is fairly clean.

Since I upgraded to 7.5, esignal itself seems to have quit crashing, but the datamanager still crashes constantly.

What type of power supply do you have and internet connection?
Just a few last checks before we start trouble shooting. Everything else seems up to par! Not, sure if the e-mail function would cause any problems? I don't use it.

I have an Antec case which is well ventilated with a 350 watt P4 and AMD approved power supply.

I have an ADSL internet connection distributed through a NetGear RP114 Router / 4 port switch.

The 350 might do it? And I would not take AMD's or Intel's approval for it because the are just chip gurus not overall pc gurus.(plus the power supply feeds all functions in a pc not just the chip) I have a router that did cause problems with the datafeed. Yours may need to be configured. Mine was fighting the datafeed causing problems.

The frustarating part about this is that the machine was running great with 2000 Pro. I upgraded to XP Pro for better support of the dual head video card, and now the machine crashes constantly.

What all is crashing? If your getting constant crashes in alot of programs or just a few. More than likely you need to do a fresh install of XP and change some settings along with changing you power supply to atleast 450. I know I had to. If you want more info about this check out the "Video Card" post in 7.x

I know how bad this sucks I had to research this to fix the problem. I now have no problem at all!

Other Options to Check on XP Crashing

Here's a summary of my successful efforts to fix my PC

1. I got the latest video drivers directly from the video card manufacturer. For some reason XP update s/w didn't find it.

2. I got a 450 watt power supply. This beefed up the capabilities of the the +/-12v and other voltages. Not neccessarily the +5v.

3. I moved all three of my video cards next to each other to eliminate bus noise problems.

I believe these three changes solved the problem for my PC especialy moving the cards.

However, I am not sure about what to do with your PC. BTW, that's a nice PC you have

So I would recommend you do items 1-3. However, in terms of your card arrangement I suggest the following:

Slot 0 (AGP) MX 440 64MB Dual head video card
Slot 1 NetGear NIC
Slot 2 Pinnacle Real Time Firewire card

The reason for this arrangment is to have the cards with the highest frequency signals as close to Slot 0 as possible. This may reduce any bus noise problem in you PC. It worked wonders for me.

Finally,

You can use the Windows Task Manager to lower the priority or any s/w to fined s/w incompatibilities that may plague your system.

Good luck and keep on testing. It took me two weeks to solve my PC crash problem but once I solved it my PC has behaved like an angel.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I built this machine about 2 years ago for digital video editing, and it performed flawlessly. Now that I am using for something totally different I think that it is time to go back to square one and re-optimize it.

I am going to pull out all of the cards, re-formatt the drive, and start with a fresh install of XP Pro. Then I will add associated hardware one piece at a time to help spot any problems.

I still need the machine for other work, including editing video, but it has to be reliable for trading. I trade forex 24/7 and use this machine to generate e-mail signals to my phone. If it won't run unattended then it is going to kill my trading.

Someone had mentioned configurationn of the router. Good you give me more info on that supject please?
