  • Installing Q Chart on a New Computer

I wonder if Larry Marchman can help me with this. I just bought a new HP computer with 9 GB Ram and Intel's latest Chip and one Terrabite hard disk. On my older computer I have been using QCharts 4.5 version 4.5.0.0 and would like initially to continue using it on my new computer, till I upgrade to using 5.1 or 6 versions. A few questions:
What is the site to download vesrions 4.5 or 5.1?
What files do I need to move from the old computer to the new one so that I can keep my settings, workspaces and symbols?
Is version 6 still a memory hog or I should not care about this with my new computer?

    Hi Ahmed....long time.

Both 4.5 and 5.1 will no longer run come Oct 26, 2009...R.I.P
The plug will be pulled on the Continuum datafeed servers on that date.
    5.1 is still available at...

or I can get you a 4.5 if you really must have it.
Send me a PM if this is desired.

However, given the short life span of 5.1, I recommend forgetting it or 4.5 and instead install Version 6.
There are a couple of options here.
One is 6.0.3.1613, the final Maintenance Release of 6.0.3.
It's at the above QCharts.com link.
But 6.0.3 also has a very short life span left.
The 6.1 Gold release, due mid-September, will be a mandatory Version 6 upgrade.

So, I'm gonna recommend that you jump right to Version 6.1.
It's currently in Beta, but looks solid for the most part.
A couple of minor warts still, but better than 6.0.3 imho.
    Here's the Beta forum...

There's a lot of work that Bill Bledsoe (thanks Bill !!) has done regarding moving to Version 6.
Please do go to this link, and look to the left-side pane for the QCharts 6 page.

If you have been a QFAI user, don't bother to install it on your new box.
It's going bye bye also soon.

Now, what files to copy from the old computer?
    Most importantly, your workspaces.
I don't know where you keep yours, but they are filetype .QCW.
In addition, any .SYM files that you may have created.
And layout files. They have many different filetypes, depending on the window type...quotesheet layout vs chart layout vs T&S layout. I'll leave it to you to know which are important to you, assuming you have created custom layout files.

Regarding settings, it won't take long to just go thru View>Preferences and set them fresh. There's a different set of tabs in Prefs vs 5.1/4.5.

oh...the memory leak issues with early V6's has long been solved. I see no memory issues with 6.1 at all. And trust me, ya got's more than enough memory.

    HTH,
