Where are the symbols?

I am using vs 6.2.0 and am confused about what the number of symbols number at the bottom of the page means. For example, on the workspace that I use most of the time, it shows there are 198 symbols. That number is far greater than what I have on that workspace which has always been confusing to me. I just opened a new workspace which is blank and I am still showing 144 symbols. Does anyone know how that number is calculated?

The two numbers represent the number of symbols being tracked by the Data Manager (workspace, alerts and other third party applications using the data manager). And the other is the maximum number of symbols you have available to use.
