Downloader vs eSignal

With the DataOnDemand technology, do I need the Downloader at all?
So far I've never used it.
Any suggestions what else can it be good for if I don't need to save files on my harddisk?

In general you do not need it.
However, if you want to create charts for some symbols that are not enabled for Data On Demand (see this thread) then you would use it to create your Local files. In those cases you would also need a downloader to retrieve historical data because Metastock will only store it when the File Server is online
