The S&P 500 is first and foremost an index (symbol $SPX). For information on the index see the S&P 500 page at the CBOE
The index can be traded as futures (root symbols are SP for the full size contract and ES for the e-mini), ETFs (for example the SPDRs symbol SPY) or as options.
