I use a SMA to define the trend on the charts I use for Forex analysis. I use the same technique on the different time frames, and use multiples of my SMA to show the trend on other time frames.
For instance, if I use a 100 bar SMA to define the trend on a 1 hour chart, then I would use a 400 bar SMA on a 15 min chart, to show the trend for the hour bars.
15 x 4 = 1 hour.
So on the 15 min chart I would plot a SMA of 100 bars to define the trend for the 15 min bars, and a SMA of 400 bars to depict the trend as it would be shown on an hour chart.
I think the same technique would work with any type of calculation based on bars.
