The "minis" or "e-minis", such as the e-mini S&P (ES), e-mini Dow (YM), Crude (QM), etc, are the electronically traded (hence the e in e-mini) smaller sized versions of the corresponding pit traded future contracts ie SP, DJ, CL, etc.
If you want to know more about these future contracts I would suggest you visit the exchanges on which they are traded in particular the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (www.cme.com) and the Chicago Board of Trade (www.cbot.com). Both have extensive sections dedicated to these products.
