Nasdaq v Nasdaq Composite

Hello,

I'm going to show my naivete here with the question I'm about to ask.

Anyway, I notice that most newspapers and financial websites highlight the S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq. Only CNBC constantly show the Nasdaq composite. Can someone advise on whether its more prudent to follow Nasdaq or Nasdaq composite. I have a general idea on what the nasdaq composite is comprised of but I was wondering if you guys/girls would let me know which of the two you generally watch.

My take on this is that Equity traders commonly follow the NASDAQ Composite ($COMPQ), while Futures and Options traders follow the NASDAQ 100 ($NDX), because the corresponding derivatives are based on that index.
