  • tick data locking up

    Hi-
Does any know of a way to have tick data not lock-up on a screen as the market starts to move on high volume.
I'm running a 2gb 1 gb ram computer with 4 screens. I have displayed one 3000tick chart, one 1500 tick chart and 0ne 10,000 tick chart. When the market is moving slowly the charts can typically keep up but whenever any volume comes in, they all can freeze-up for the entire high volume move.
I have 7 days of historal data on each chart (which I believe is the max.
Using minute or second data is not an option for me because of the type of indicators I use (which are only effective on tick data)
If it's a matter of upgrading to an even more powerful computer than I will do that but it would be helpful if anyone out there is having success running 3 or 4 tick charts in a successful computer set-up.
If there is a way to do something with my tick data set-up or time template, I would obviously try that first .
I would imaging that someone out there is successfully using 3 or more tick charts.
    Thanks for any help

As the markets continue to get busier and busier, tick charts get more and more demanding on the CPU. The CME recently announced that they are hitting all new records with the amount of volume being traded on that exchange, and that they are up 30% over last year's numbers. About 1 year ago eSignal changed the way our system requirements are established to account for this phenomena. We now have a 3rd category called the Power User Requirements.

    System Requirements

In looking at your user pattern, you may qualify as meeting the higher end requirements. What symbols are you tracking in these tick charts?

That would then push you into the Power User bracket. You can likely verify that your CPU is being pegged hard during these peak periods by monitoring your CPU usage. This can be done in Windows XP by using the built-in performance monitor. To pull this up:

        1) Right-click on a blank area of your Windows Taskbar
        2) Select Task Manager
        3) Click on the Performance tab

You should noticed your CPU going to 100% when the market picks up. If this is the case, then upgrading your PC would be the best solution to this.

We do have a few partners that put together some very nice custom workstations designed for traders, and one in particular will even configure, install and test all the software you use to ensure optimal performance. If you'd like more information on that, please feel free to Private Message me your contact information, and I'll have a specialist contact you about these solutions.
