Can you try temporarily disabling it and see if it helps?

Ok...I had another LC user that actually uninstalled Norton and the grey screen went away. I wanted to see if just disabling it would do the same thing.

Can you try an easy thing for me? I need to make sure your Java installation is up to date. The easiest way to do that is to go here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and click the green "Verify Installation" button in the upper LH corner. Follow the screens to completion, updating as it tells you to.

Can you try that and get it updated and see if that helps?

The browser might matter. But let's do one thing at a time.
Let's get Java updated, and see if that fixes it.
Let me know when it's updated and if it works after that.

Okay the newer version has downloaded but now I have a white blank screen with a red X in the top left handed corner instead of the gray screen.

How hard is it for you to install a plain Internet Explorer 6 browser?
No Yahoo or ATT or Google toolbars.
                      Just the browser?
Also, what O/S are you running?

my operating system is XP, it is a new computer. I had it made with Xp instead of Vista a while back. I could download the internet explorer browser if that would help

Let me know if that works.
